![]() ![]() * Day lamented the end of the annual series with Penn State after this season, noting those games have typically down to the final drive most years. He noted it will be on the quarterback to find the one-on-one match-up in some situations. * Day was asked about teams game planning to control WR Marvin Harrison Jr. Walk-ons Reis Stocksdale (knee) and Zak Herbstreit (cardiac issue) are both out to start preseason camp but both remain with the team. * Day said all of the scholarship players who were injured in the spring are back and full-go. He said he was looking forward to seeing redshirt freshman Devin Brown in the spring game before he was ruled out due to a finger injury. * Day said junior Kyle McCord has a slight edge in the quarterback battle because he’s been around longer. * Day believes the new TV deal, which will eventually feature network games on FOX, CBS and NBC each week, will give the Big Ten greater exposure and help with recruiting. * Of the late arriving freshmen, Day said QB Lincoln Kienholz, LB Arvell Reese and CB Calvin Simpson-Hunt have all had good showings in the summer program. * Day said he likes his team’s leadership and sees a team that is “anxious to get back on the field and play.” He talks about guns, gambling and speeding/traffic issues with cars as three hot button issues. * Regarding off-the-field issues, Day said he talks about three things with his team. * He said they made nearly every off-season day about competition, in some part in reaction to a second consecutive loss to Michigan. They are hoping that decision pays dividends for Malone. * Day said the OSU staff believed Ole Miss transfer Tywone Malone could be a good football player if he gave up baseball and basketball to just concentrate on football. “There is the day to day organization, making corrections and installations, then the play calling comes at the end (of the process),” he said. He noted there is more to being a coordinator than just calling plays. * Day said he and Brian Hartline will get the play calling mechanism nailed down in preseason camp. He noted redshirt freshman Tegra Tshabola and true freshman Luke Montgomery as others who are competing there after big summer showings. * He said San Diego State transfer Josh Simmons looks good in the summer program but the coaches will need to see him play at a high level on the field in camp before he locks down the right tackle job. “It’s a long season and we will need them all,” said Day, who also noted Chip Trayanum and Dallan Hayden had good summers. * Day said he is excited about having a deep and healthy running back room with TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams and Evan Pryor all starting the year healthy. He said Jackson is at 255 pounds and “looks great.” Tuimoloau, Jack Sawyer and Kenyatta Jackson and DTs Mike Hall, Tyleik Williams and Ty Hamilton all come through and play heavy reps this fall. * Regarding the defense, Day said he wants to see a physical unit with the defensive line dictating the tempo. as a “competitor.” After playing wideout at ND, Styles will battle for playing time at cornerback at OSU. * The OSU coach labeled Notre Dame transfer Lorenzo Styles Jr. * Day said redshirt freshman Carson Hinzman is firmly in the battle to start the season as OSU’s starting center. Tate’s mother, Ashley Griggs, was shot and killed on July 16 in Chicago. * Day said freshman WR Carnell Tate is coping with the death of his mother recently. ![]() (Those moves clear two scholarships as OSU was working to get down to 85 players for preseason camp.) Veteran OL Grant Toutant has also decided to retire from the sport as well. ![]() He underwent a procedure that will preclude him from playing. * Day clarified that OL Avery Henry’s football career is over after treatment for bone cancer.
